An acupuncture point diagram is used after the acupuncturist has made a thorough evaluation of the patient’s needs according to his background and examination of the patient’s body. Once the examination has been completed, then the acupuncturist will use the meridian chart of the different insertion points to suit that of the patient’s needs.

Before Using the Acupuncture Point Diagram

The evaluation process usually begins with an examination of the patient’s face and tongue. The tongue is then checked for its size and shape, as well as for its coloring, whether it has any films on it, and whether it has teeth marks on it. Afterwards, the acupuncturist asks the patient a series of questions regarding his bodily functions and activities: how often he urinates and defecates, what those are like, what his appetite, whether he has a fever or chills, etc. The acupuncturist will also perform palpitation on the patient’s body at different points such as the wrist and fingers, in order to search for any tender points that may need to be addressed in the acupuncture therapy.

Using the Acupuncture Point Diagram

After these series of evaluation tests are done, then the acupuncturist will determine from the acupuncture point diagram where the acupuncture needles are to be inserted in the patient’s body. There are twelve primary channels that are listed on the acupuncture chart which covers all the vital organs in the body. These organs are: the stomach, large intestine, small intestine, gall bladder, spleen, bladder, heart, pericardium kidney, lungs, liver, and San Jiao.

Acupuncture point diagram also shows the channels in the body that correspond to these different pathways. There are three yin and yang channels in each arm and three yin and yang channels in each leg. These channels are located in the foot and the hand; they cover the vital organs of the body as mentioned earlier.
